Case Description

In mining operations, the shaft hoisting system handles the vertical transport of coal, ore, waste rock, materials, equipment, and personnel, serving as the primary connection between the surface and underground workings.

Main Components

A mine hoisting system consists primarily of the hoist, wire ropes, conveyances, headframe or tower, head sheave or deflection sheave, loading and unloading devices, shaft guides, and shaft collar facilities. The Headframe stands at the shaft collar, serving as the supporting structure that bears the loads of the head sheave and wire ropes. The Head Sheave is mounted at the top of the headframe, guiding the wire rope as it changes direction—one end connects to the conveyance, while the other wraps around the hoist drum. The Hoist Drive provides the power for the system. Its motor drives the drum to rotate, spooling or paying out the wire rope to raise or lower the conveyance. The Hoist Rope connects the hoist to the conveyance and transmits the pulling force; its safety factor is critical to overall hoisting safety. The Conveyance travels within the shaft and typically takes the form of a Cage for transporting personnel or a Skip designed specifically for ore lifting.

Operating Principle

The motor drives the hoist drum to rotate, winding or releasing the wire rope. The rope passes over the head sheave at the top of the headframe, with one end connected to the conveyance in the shaft and the other end attached to a counterweight or a second conveyance, enabling balanced reciprocating hoisting. Upon reaching the designated loading or unloading position, the system automatically decelerates and stops, ready for the next cycle.

Safety Devices

The system is equipped with multiple safety protections: the Overwind Protection Device automatically cuts power and applies the brake when the conveyance exceeds the normal stopping position by more than 0.5 meters. The Safety Catch engages automatically to lock the cage onto the guide rails in the event of a rope break. The Shaft Collar Safety Gate is interlocked with the hoist signaling system to prevent personnel or objects from falling into the shaft. The Braking System features multiple independent brake circuits working with the PLC control system to automatically apply brakes in cases of overspeed, overwind, or power failure.
